Teardrop vs. round breast implants

No two people are exactly alike. You’re a wholly unique individual – from your personality, to your sense of style, to the size and shape of your body. So when it comes to breast augmentation, you’ll need to spend some time deciding which kind of implant will give you the distinctive look you want to achieve.

While it’s important to consider breast implants sizes, you should consider the shape of implants as well. There are many implant shapes available, but two of the most popular options among patients today are teardrop implants and round implants. To help you decide which shape is best for you, let’s explore the differences between them.

Teardrop Breast Implants

Teardrop breast implants are shaped as they are named: like a teardrop. This means more fullness toward the bottom of the breast, tapering off at the top. You may also hear these referred to as “anatomic implants,” because they are thought to closely mimic the appearance of many natural breasts.

These implants are usually crafted from a cohesive silicone gel, which is quite strong, long-lasting, and associated with lower rates of rupture than earlier versions of silicone implants. Despite their durability, they remain soft to the touch and provide a natural-looking result.

Round Breast Implants

Round breast implants are the most common choice for women who undergo breast augmentation. With a symmetrical, circular structure, they offer a great deal of flexibility in terms of size, width, and projection.

While round implants will often result in a fuller appearance, especially in the upper part of your breast, they can be adjusted to fit your proportions. You can also choose to fill round implants with either saline or silicone, customizing the implant to your exact aesthetic requirements.

Factors to Consider When Making Your Decision

There’s more to making a decision about your implant shape than how you want it to look. Additional factors that can influence your choice include:

– Existing breast tissue. During a breast augmentation, the goal is to place the implant beneath as much existing breast tissue as possible. Women who have little to no existing breast tissue may find that round implants will not look as natural as teardrop implants.

– Cost. It’s essential to find the right breast implant to fit your budget, and in general, teardrop implants are more expensive than round implants.

– Longevity. Over time, gravity can affect the appearance of round implants, causing them to droop or sag. Teardrop implants tend to retain their shape longer than round implants. However, teardrop implants are also at risk of rotating, causing an asymmetrical appearance which can require surgery to fix.

– Incision size. Different breast shapes require different types of incisions. To properly position an implant beneath the breast tissue, the incision for teardrop implants must be larger than for round implants. Larger incisions can result in larger scars and a longer recovery period.
