Hematoma is a complication that surprisingly is not seen very often. However, when it occurs it need to be dealt with promptly. Essentially bleeding occurs after surgery and since there is not enough space for the implant and blood, the breast swells and causes extreme pain. There may be bruising depending on the rate of bleeding. The treatment is surgery to remove the blood and replace the same implant. Most of the time, the site of bleeding is not found and has stopped. Nonetheless, the blood needs to be removed to prevent further complications. This complication usually occurs in the first few days, but it can occur weeks later.
This 25 year old woman presented the next day after breast revision developed pain and swelling of right breast. Hematoma diagnosed and she was taken back to surgery and the hematoma drained. After surgery you can see marked improved appearance.
