Asymmetry is a broad term meaning that the breast look different. If you look carefully at any woman’s breast, there is only some degree of asymmetry present. Most women are not aware of this unless it is very significant. Remember that they are sisters, not identical twins, is very true. A good cosmetic surgeon is able to preserve symmetry or correct asymmetric breast. Asymmetry can be size, shape, position, or combination. These asymmetry should be pointed out prior to surgery. Many asymmetries can be corrected with just breast implants alone, but often times a lift is needed, particularly if there is a difference in nipple position. Besides naturally occurring asymmetries cosmetic breast surgery procedures can cause asymmetries. Complications that often lead to these problems are deflation, capsule contracture or bottoming out. Most of the time, these asymmetries are correctable, but can be persistent.
The following 5 cases show examples of improvement of asymmetry by only placement of implants. As long as the nipple positions are close, implants alone can fix asymmetries.
The following 5 cases, the degree of asymmetry was so severe that implants alone were not enough to correct. A combination of implant placement and a lift was needed to correct.
