Breast implant options: silicone or saline?

Dr. Sarosy offers both silicone and saline breast implants and will provide a personalized recommendation based on your goals. Silicone and saline breast implants both have silicone outer shells, but they’re filled with different materials.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants are filled with a thick, sticky gel material that closely mimics the feel and movement of natural breast tissue. Because silicone implants are pre-filled, they require slightly larger incisions than saline implants. Many women prefer silicone implants because they look and feel more like natural breasts. Silicone implants are available to patients aged 22 and older.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are filled with a sterile salt water solution and are placed behind or in front of the pectoral muscle before being filled. This method allows a patient to have smaller incisions. Saline implants are thought to be a bit harder to the touch, but new technology has made them nearly indistinguishable from the feel of silicone implants. Saline implants are available to patients aged 18 and older.
What to expect from a breast augmentation

In addition to choosing silicone or saline breast implants, you will also need to determine your incision placement: the areola, below the breast, or through the armpit. Most patients experience some soreness and swelling for the first few weeks after breast implants or a boob job, but these can be managed with medication. Do and don’ts after breast augmentation?
Refrain from getting your breasts wet – either in a bath, shower, or pool, for the first weeks after your surgery. Don’t smoke. Smoking negatively impacts your body’s ability to heal after surgery. After your breast augmentation, don’t wear an underwire bra, which can not only be painful but also prevent your breast implants from settling properly. What age is recommended for breast implants?
Even if you feel your breasts are fully developed by age 16, we recommend waiting until at least age 18 before having breast augmentation surgery. The FDA-recommended minimum age for breast implants is: 18 years old for saline implants. 22 years old for silicone implants.
How soon after breast augmentation can I lift my arms?
Following your breast augmentation or implants, we recommend no lifting and keeping the arms below the shoulder for at least two weeks. After that, your arms can then be raised. And for 3 months we recommend no lifting at all or no more than 10 pounds, if necessary.
