Liposuction Works on These 10 Parts of Your Body

A balanced diet and regular exercise are the hallmarks of a healthy weight loss regimen, but sometimes even substantial weight loss isn’t enough to give you the sculpted body of your dreams. That’s why liposuction is the second most common cosmetic procedure in the world. It removes those pesky fat deposits that no diet program can melt away. Liposuction can work wonders on these 10 parts of your body:

1. Abdomen

There are several different kinds of body fat, but the type that’s most resistant to diet and exercise is subcutaneous fat, which can be found beneath the skin and on top of the abdominal muscle wall. Liposuction will remove pockets of subcutaneous fat and contour your middle, improving your overall shape. And while abdomen liposuction is popular for both men and women, female patients tend to have softer and less fibrous fat than men, making the procedure easier to perform on women.

2. Back

Liposuction is a great solution for getting rid of unwanted back fat, which can be categorized into a few different areas:

  • Female flanks, or the fat that bulges below the bra strap

  • The upper-outer back near the armpit

  • Waist fat above the hips

  • Lower back fat just above the tailbone

  • The unfortunately named “buffalo hump,” or fat on the upper back near the neck

Liposuction on the back is more common among female patients than male, and it can produce dramatic improvements to a woman’s figure.

3. Buttocks

The buttocks are one of the only areas on the body where subcutaneous fat is welcome—in moderation, of course. Well-proportioned buttocks are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they also fit into clothing more comfortably. Liposuction on the buttocks requires an excellent grasp of symmetry, and surgeons typically use microcannulas (a smaller version of the hollow vacuum tube) in order to produce smooth, symmetric results.

4. Chest/Breast

The goal for liposuction in the male chest area is relatively simple: improving the patient’s physical appearance by removing unsightly “breasts.” But for women, breast liposuction can not only improve appearance, but also enhance the overall quality of life. Excessive breast fat limits athletic ability, causes pain and physical impairment in the back, neck and shoulders, and makes bra- and clothing-shopping extremely difficult. Breast reduction via liposuction also produces a moderate but gratifying breast lift, and it doesn’t leave surgical scars as with traditional breast surgery.

5. Male flanks

Affectionately known as love handles, male flanks are located just above the crest of the hipbone, where fat accumulation bulges over the belt line. The largest bulk is usually located toward the back of the flanks, making them appear to bulge even larger from behind. Liposuction can remove most of the volume from these flanks, allowing belted trousers to look much more flattering on the male figure.

6. Face and neck

While many people turn to facelifts to get rid of extra fat around the chin, cheeks, jowls, and neck, liposuction is a safe effective technique that results in a more natural appearance. For older women with excessively wrinkled skin on their face, liposuction combined with either laser resurfacing or a chemical peel will help achieve beautiful results.

7. Inner thighs/knees

Inner thigh liposuction significantly improves the silhouette of the leg and helps prevent thighs from rubbing against each other. Most women who opt for inner thigh liposuction have fat deposits that extend over the knee as well, so inner thighs and inner knees are often treated at the same time. Liposuction of the upper inner thigh is also a common procedure for male patients to improve their ability to participate in athletics.

8. Outer thighs

Thigh fat is another area, like the abdomen, that is notoriously immune to diet and exercise, and people are often discouraged from weight loss regimens when they cannot see visible improvement in their shape. Liposuction of the outer thighs not only results in shapelier legs, but it also makes shopping for clothes a breeze, especially for women with “two body syndrome”—the term used for those who need to buy different sized tops and bottoms due to extreme disproportion.

9. Hips

Women who opt for liposuction of the outer thighs typically require liposuction of the hips as well for optimal results. That’s because in many cases, liposuction that only treats the outer thigh, ignoring excessive fat in the hips, lower buttock, and upper back area of the thigh, results in a disproportionate and unflattering outcome.

10. Upper arms

Exercising your arms typically results in stronger muscles, but nearly zero fat reduction. Fortunately, liposuction of the arms consistently yields the highest level of patient satisfaction and happiness, allowing women to wear sleeveless blouses, dresses and swimsuits without self-consciousness. However, the goal for liposuction of the arms shouldn’t be maximum fat removal. Proportion is everything, and too-skinny arms won’t look good against a curvy body.
