Liposuction versus tummy tuck

There has been a huge debate among many between liposuction and a tummy tuck. The two procedures are used for somewhat the same reasons such as the removal of excess fat from the belly. The two procedures are a common cause of confusion hence the need to differentiate them in terms of how they are carried out.

A liposuction involves the removal of a layer of skin from the lower belly while simultaneously tightening the skin on the upper abdomen. Fat is removed using a hallow stainless steel tube and a vacuum like mechanism; this is carried out through a series of small incisions which are made on the belly. Ideally the procedure is mainly used to reduce specific areas of the body that are non-responsive to diets and exercise such as the lower abdomen, hips and thighs.

On the other hand, a tummy tuck involves the removal of a large amount of skin from the lower abdomen. The procedure was more common before the onset of liposuction which has become a relatively more preferred procedure by most patients. However the procedure is highly recommended if there is excess amount of skin present. This may occur especially if there has been an extensive amount of weight loss hence the skin is left hanging characterized by loose skin folds.

Regarding the recovery periods after a surgery has been carried out; a tummy tuck may leave one inactive for slightly longer than a tummy tuck. The reason behind this is that tummy tucks may involve large incisions made on the skin unlike liposuctions which usually involve just a small incision where fat can be sucked out.

There are however a few factors that should be considered before deciding to have either of the two operations. In some instances, both procedures may result in much more desirable results in terms of body appearance. The first and most important fact to consider is the recovery time, risks or side effects of both procedures. The next thing to do would be to opt for the best options considering the situation. For one who has excess amounts of skin or lower abdominal skin laxity, stretch stomach muscles or stretch marks, the best option would be to have a tummy tuck.

A liposuction would be the better option for one whose weight is near their desired weight. The prices for both procedures greatly vary depending on the surgeon carrying out the procedure.
