Most often when we open celebrity lifestyle magazines and see the rich and famous luxuriating on beaches in the French Riviera, we daydream about what it might be like to be so lucky.  But when we turn the page to find mean, close-up shots of their cellulite, we cringe and thank our lucky stars that no one bothers to take photos of our dimpled bums and thighs.

Although a whopping 90% of women have cellulite, most of us are extremely self-conscious about it, even when we’re not being chased by the paparazzi. Unfortunately, there is no cure, but there are a number of things you can do to reduce and prevent cellulite.

What causes cellulite?

Structurally, cellulite is caused by fat cells bulging up between bands of connective tissue beneath the skin. But cellulite is not exclusively about fat. Even slim people can have puckered and dimpled skin beneath their skinny jeans. So although fat does play a role, there are a number of other factors that cause cellulite, including:

  • Genetics
  • Body fat percentage
  • Toxin build-up
  • Low muscle tone
  • Smoking
  • Stress

How to get rid of cellulite

Luckily, even if your genetics do predispose you to developing cellulite, you can make some lifestyle changes that diminish the appearance of those unattractive lumps and bumps.

Change your diet

Waste products and toxins trapped in fat cells play a large role in the appearance of cellulite. One of the best ways to help flush out those toxins is to eat a healthy amount of fruits and vegetables daily. Limit sugar and salt intake, and stick to lean meats. Avoid processed and deep-fried foods that cause cellulite, and limit alcohol consumption.

Hydration

Drinking sufficient amounts of water each day helps to flush toxins out of your body and diminish the appearance of unsightly cellulite. Of course, if you’re not making dietary changes as well, water can only do so much.

Strength and cardio workouts

The best way to beat the high-body-fat-low-muscle-tone conditions that cellulite loves is to add both strength training and cardiovascular exercise to your exercise routine. Anti-cellulite exercises target and tone high-fat areas like the legs and bottom. Building muscle and burning fat alters your muscle-to-fat ratio and reduces the appearance of cellulite.

Get a massage

Massage and exfoliation stimulate your body’s lymphatic drainage system, which enhances circulation and helps get rid of the toxins and excess fluids that create the rippled appearance of cellulite. Massage also helps to soften the connective tissues and minimize the dimpled effect caused by cellulite.
