Although the term “liposuction” may sound like a major undertaking that will result in flashing red lights pointing at you and announcing that you’ve “had work done,” that’s not the case at all. What is liposuction?
Liposuction is the permanent removal of fat cells for the purpose of improving the shape and contours of a person’s body. During the liposuction procedure, the doctor makes very small incisions in the skin and then uses a small tube called a cannula to suction away unwanted pockets of fat. Tumescent liposuction
Tumescent liposuction involves injection of large volumes of diluted anesthetic into the subcutaneous fat prior to insertion of the cannula. This works in two different ways: 1) It provides complete local anesthesia, allowing Dr. Sarosy to perform your liposuction procedure without the need for general anesthesia, or IV sedation; and 2) It restricts the blood vessels and causes the fat cells to swell and firm up, which allows for easier removal of the fat tissue.
Tumescent liposuction can be used virtually anywhere in the body. This includes the face and neck area, the abdomen, thighs, hips—you name it. Tumescent liposuction can also be used in cases of gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement.
Modified tumescent liposuction
Modified tumescent liposuction uses the local anesthetic to swell and firm the fat cells for easier removal, but it also involves the use of general anesthesia or heavy IV sedation to keep the patient comfortable during the process.
Modified tumescent liposuction is useful when the patient has particular anxiety about surgery or plans to combine the liposuction with other procedures.
Vaser liposuction
Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound technology to help break up the fatty tissue and loosen it from the body. This helps the surgeon remove larger amounts of fat in a shorter time period. Vaser liposuction can be used with local or general anesthesia.
Vaser liposuction is best for areas of the body where the fat is more fibrous, such as the upper abdomen, the sides, and the back.
