Microdermabrasion: What You Need to Know

You’ve heard the saying, “You’re only as old as you feel,” right? Well, at San Diego Body Contouring, while we believe that saying is true, we also believe that what you see in the mirror can have a direct impact on the way you feel.

Have you ever caught sight of yourself in the mirror and wondered why that “healthy glow” seems to elude you no matter how much you exercise, how healthy you eat, or how much sleep you get at night?

If you’re anything like many of our clients, your first thought is probably that everything you’re doing is not enough. Your default thinking is that you need more exercise, more sleep, more vegetables. But what if that’s not it at all? What if all you need is a little skin rejuvenation?

Microdermabrasion treatments can give your skin a healthy, luminous glow so that you look as youthful and vibrant as you feel.

How does microdermabrasion work?

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation (the process of removing dead cells from the surface of the skin). Exfoliation improves the texture of your skin; fights signs of aging that are more prominent in dry, dull skin cells; keeps your pores clean and unclogged; and evens out your skin tone.

Microdermabrasion does all this and more. Not only does it remove the dirt, debris, and dead cells, but it also stimulates your lower epidermal and dermal cells so that they regenerate. This means you not only get all the benefits of exfoliation, but you also get softer, brighter skin that looks and feels young and new – because it is!

Crystal Microdermabrasion vs Diamond Microdermabrasion

At San Diego Body Contouring, we provide two different types of microdermabrasion treatments: crystal and diamond. In our experience both are equally effective, though some of his clients do have their preferences.

Crystal microdermabrasion removes the outer layers of the skin with the use of a handheld device that “blasts” a high-speed flow of aluminum oxide crystals and then suctions up the dirt, dead skin cells, and used crystals.

Diamond (or “crystal-free”) microdermabrasion removes the outer layers of skin using a diamond tipped wand that “scratches” away the top layer and then vacuums up the dirt and dead skin cells.

It may be helpful to compare the two methods to “sand blasting” (crystal) and “sandpaper” (diamond). And, yes, both methods do cause some redness or irritation in the skin, but in most cases, this clears up within 24 hours. This means there is zero downtime following a microdermabrasion procedure.

Yes, you heard right. Zero downtime.

What conditions can microdermabrasion address?

Along with giving you vibrant, youthful looking skin, microdermabrasion can help with the following conditions:

Hyperpigmentation / photo-damaged skin
Mild acne
Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
Reduction of some scars – including acne scars
Reduction in the appearance of enlarged pores
Reduction in the appearance of stretch marks

Dr. Sarosy recommends a microdermabrasion treatment every two weeks until you have achieved your desired results.

For optimal effectiveness, it’s important to follow post-procedure instructions, which include the consistent use of sunscreen and soothing, hydrating products.

Which procedure is best for you?

At San Diego Body Contouring, if we asked our clientele whether their loyalty lies with crystal microdermabrasion or diamond microdermabrasion, we’d probably have a 50/50 split right down the middle. It really is a matter of preference.

The main exception to this is that people with sensitive skin, inflammatory conditions (such as acne), or vascular conditions (such as rosacea and telangiectasia) might be better suited for diamond microdermabrasion. But otherwise, both methods of microdermabrasion are safe and effective.

Dr. Charles Sarosy and our staff at San Diego Body Contouring will be happy to discuss your needs and which microdermabrasion option is best for your skin and your particular goals.
