Sure, there are lots of things you could “have done” to fight the aging process, but do you really have to start with drastic measures? No, you don’t. If you’re beginning to see fine lines and wrinkles on your face, there are a number of things you can do you to keep them in check and prevent new ones from forming – and none of them will cost you a bazillion dollars. Take a look below at the following tips for fighting off wrinkles naturally.

Moisturize

Moisturizing your skin regularly keeps it plumped up and slows the onset of wrinkles. One study showed that over an 8-year period, women with dry skin saw a 52 percent increase in the amount of visible wrinkles, but women with well-hydrated skin saw only a 22 percent increase. Moisturizers work by trapping the water content in your skin so the cells stay hydrated. No need to pay for luxury branding, either. Everyday products purchased at the drug store work just fine.

Apply sunscreen daily

Exposure to ultraviolet light ages your skin. It damages your collagen, destroying your skin’s elasticity, which makes you wrinkle more quickly. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 25, and reapply it every two hours. Wearing a hat or carrying an umbrella will also block sunrays from penetrating your skin.

Sleep silk sheets

Ok, this may sound too good to be true, but it’s not. Silk fibers help your skin retain its moisture overnight. So a night of sleep on a silk pillowcase can leave you with more hydrated skin than if you’d slept on cotton. Hydrated, plump skin cells show fewer lines than dry skin cells. Now you have no excuse not to buy those silk sheets you’ve been eyeing.

Eat avocados (and wear them, too)

The fats in avocado are great for your skin. They’re also high in glutathione, which helps flush toxins from your system, making them a great weapon against acne and wrinkles. Eat them on a sandwich, in a salad, or just as is. You can also get great wrinkle-fighting power by mixing avocados with honey, fresh cream, and powdered flaxseeds, and then spreading the mix on your face and leaving it for an hour. You’ll love the way your skin looks and feels afterward.

Ditch the bottles and straws

Constant pursing of your lips to suck from a straw or drink from a bottle creates lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Instead, sip from a glass whenever you can.

Take ten

Scowling, frowning, and other facial expressions associated with stress can cause permanent creasing on your face. Because we tend to hold our tension in our faces, relaxation is an important part of fighting off wrinkles. Take some time every day for the things that help you relax, such as a walk, a long bath, meditation, a yoga class. This will help you de-stress. Be sure to pay special attention to relaxing your face anytime you remember.

Get your ZZZZs

Insufficient sleep raises your cortisol levels. Cortisol is your stress hormone, and too much of it can slow down new cell growth and damage tissue. Getting enough sleep each night will help keep your stress levels in check – and those pesky wrinkles, too!

Quit smoking

You’ve seen them on others before. Smokers’ lines around the lips. Not pretty. The best thing you can do to avoid them is to never ever take up smoking. And if you do smoke, the best thing you can do is quit.

Eat your veggies

The antioxidants found in some fruits and vegetables provide a sort of protection for your skin. Studies have shown that those who eat high fresh foods containing high amounts of vitamins C and E have less photoaging, fewer wrinkles, and less age-related dry skin. Great wrinkle-fighting foods include berries, kale, walnuts, beans, prunes, artichokes, tomatoes, cantaloupe, spinach, and so many more.
