So what’s the big difference Difference Between Botox and dermal fillers? No doubt you’ve heard of Botox – also known as the most popular weapon in the war on wrinkles. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 7 million people received Botox injections last year, making it the #1 minimally invasive cosmetic procedure performed in the country.

But when it comes to injectable anti-aging treatments, Botox isn’t your only option. Dermal fillers are another way to rejuvenate your complexion and restore a fresh, youthful glow to your face. Even though they share the same method of delivery, Botox and dermal fillers work very differently.

To help you decide which cosmetic treatment is right for you, let’s review the differences between Botox and dermal fillers.

The skinny on Botox

What’s it used for?

Botox is commonly used to treat lines and wrinkles in three areas of the face:

  1. Between the brows. Those deep furrows that appear between your eyebrows when you frown are aptly named “frown lines,” and can be treated with Botox.

  2. On the forehead. Raising your eyebrows or furrowing your forehead can result in deep wrinkles etched across the top of your face.

  3. Around the eyes. Botox is quite effective at reducing the appearance of crow’s feet, the lines that form around your eyes when you smile.

How does Botox work?

The active ingredient in Botox is botulinum toxin type A, a naturally occurring neurotoxin that works by temporarily relaxing facial muscles. When the muscles relax, the skin above them softens, causing wrinkles to smooth out and disappear.

How long does Botox last?

Results from Botox generally last between three and six months, though this can vary from patient to patient.

Dermal fillers: the facts

What’s it used for?

Dermal fillers are most commonly used to:

  • Gently soften facial lines and wrinkles.

  • “Volumize” the face, by adding plumpness and lift to sagging cheeks, chins, or jawlines.

  • Even out facial imperfections, such as acne scars.

  • Enhance contours and decrease shadows around the eyes and cheekbones.

How do dermal fillers work?

Most of our dermal fillers, such as Juvederm or Restylane, are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that’s found naturally in your skin and connective tissue to help retain moisture and firmness. When dermal fillers are injected beneath your skin, they add enough volume to smooth out your surface wrinkles and eliminate signs of aging.

How long do dermal fillers last?

The length of time your results will last depends on the location you’ve had treated and the type of dermal filler you use. Most of the time, you’ll enjoy wrinkle-free skin for four to six months before follow-up treatment is needed.

Botox or dermal fillers: which one is right for me?

When you’re making the choice between Botox and dermal fillers, it’s important to consider the types of wrinkles you want to eliminate. For lines and folds that are a result of facial movements, such as crow’s feet or frown lines, Botox is your best bet. On the other hand, if you’re looking to restore lost volume to your facial contours, you might want to go for a dermal filler, instead.

The best way to make your decision is to have a frank and detailed discussion with a caring, qualified doctor. At San Diego Body Contouring, we can help you choose the right treatment.
