Common Breast Augmentation Myths — Fact vs Fiction

The Internet is an amazing tool. We can use it to communicate, shop, research, and all kinds of other things from the comfort of our desks. But the Internet has also led to all kinds of scams and miscommunication. These days, it’s so much easier to spread rumors and false information than ever before.

At San Diego Body Contouring, we see the result of this on a regular basis. People call us and come in to discuss procedures that they swear they’ve read up on, but it often turns out that much of the information they’ve gathered is incorrect.

Breast augmentation is one of those subjects that come up quite a bit. So, we’d like to take a few brief moments to dispel some of the myths floating out there.

Myth 1: All augmented breasts look fake.

This is just not true. A professional, experienced, and honest cosmetic surgeon will take into consideration your weight, height, and natural breast size and shape, as well as the look you want to achieve. Some women you see with unnatural looking implants chose that exaggerated look. Others made the mistake of choosing the wrong surgeon. And take into account that for every woman whose implants look fake, there are three or four more whose implants look so natural, you didn’t even notice they were implants.

Myth 2: Implants feel unnaturally firm.

No implant feels exactly like a natural breast, but breast augmentation has come a long way in recent decades. When you have a cosmetic surgeon who uses right-sized implants that fit comfortably, and who places them under the chest muscle, your implants will feel like a close second to the real thing. It’s important to follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions to help maintain softness and prevent the buildup of scar tissue around the implants.

Myth 3: Implants have to be replaced often.

This is a common misconception. Implants do not need to be replaced unless there’s a problem. Yes, you may need to have one or two follow-up surgeries in your life, but you won’t need to undergo (or pay for) major surgery every few years. Implants last much longer than you may think. The majority of breast implants last 10 to 20 years without complications.

Myth 4: You have to choose between breast lift and breast augmentation.

Nope. Not true. Cosmetic surgeons often combine breast lift and augmentation procedures. The augmentation helps the patient enhance the size, shape, and level of firmness of her breasts, and the lift changes the position of the nipple, which can drastically improve the overall results of the procedure.

Myth 5: Once you have implants, you have to change your lifestyle.

Breast augmentation is major surgery, and yes, for a little while after your procedure, you’ll need to restrict your activities much as you would after any major surgery. But after the initial healing has taken place (talk to your doctor about specific timelines), you’ll be able to get back to jogging, kickboxing, skydiving, or whatever else you like to do for fun. Just be sure to follow your doctor’s post-op instructions.
